Valentine DIY Craft Tutorial - Song of Songs 2:16

 Valentine DIY Craft Tutorial

Song of Songs 2:16 Valentine doorhanger

Supplies: wooden heart base, corrugated cardboard, faux floral rice paper, 2 sizes of lace, 2 index cards, 3 pink rose buds, heart shaped lace, pink yarn.

First, remove jute hanger from the wooden heart base. Set aside until it is reattached at the finish.

Line the corrugated cardboard up to the bottom of the wooden heart base. Lightly draw a line onto the wooden heart base using the top of the cardboard as a gauge.

Paint the top half with white chalk paint. It is okay if you paint a little farther than the pencil line.

The reason for the white paint is so the colors on the faux rice paper will stand out better. Below you can see the difference. The top blue arrow shows the rice paper up against the white background, which causes the colors to stand out better. The bottom blue arrow shows where the wooden background showing through. This beige-ish background actually causes the rice paper to fade or blend in, causing the the rice paper colors to not be as colorful.

Here is another look at the difference.

Choose how you want the flowers in the rice paper to be positioned on the base. If you want more darker pink colors, shift the rice paper accordingly. If you want more greenish yellow flowers showing, center the rice paper to display that color better.

Adhere the faux rice paper by using hot glue. Do NOT use mod podge or elmers glue. Only put a line of hot glue on the heart shape's outer edge and at the bottom of the rice paper where the white paint line is at. Do not place any glue in the middle of the rice paper. It will damage the faux look by removing the crinkles.

The picture below shows where the line of hot glue goes.

Flip the heart to the backside and cut the excess rice paper off.

This is how your project should look at this point.

Next, put a line of hot flue on the outer edge on the bottom of the heart to adhere the corrugated cardboard. Do not glue down the top part of the cardboard. The corrugated cardboard is to be a pocket to tuck the Valentine scripture into. (No hot glue across the top of the cardboard.)

The blue arrow shows how your project should look with a pocket.

If any excess cardboard is hanging over the edge, go ahead and trim it.

Next add the heart shaped lace to the top of the corrugated cardboard. Glue the pink yard straight across the top for added color.

Turn your project to the backside. Take the larger, lighter pink lace and glue it around the outer edge of the heart. At the top of the humps, add a pleat at the peaks for it to lay better. If you miss this step, it will still work but will be a little tighter and less ruffle-ie.

Pinch the lace together to make a peak at the bottom point. This allows it to lay right and look better.

This is a closer look at the "pinched" lace. The pinch actually sticks up from the wooden base.

After completing that step, cut the excess lace at the end straight instead of at an angle. Then add a dot of hot glue to the end and attach it to the beginning edge to make it look like it is one continuous piece of lace. If not, it has a tendency to droop at the top instead of standing up.

This is what your project should look like at this point.

Next, take the smaller, darker lace and hot glue it on the edge of the wooden heart base in front of the lighter pink lace.

This shows a close-up of the wooden edge where you add the hot glue and darker lace.

This shows another angle of where the lace is to be glued down.

You can see the rice paper on the front and the lighter pink glued to the back. The top blue arrow shows how the darker pink is to be placed. The bottom blue arrow shows the wooden edge.

After gluing the darker lace down, your project should look like this.

Take your scissors and poke a hole where the jute was at the beginning. This is found easily if you look at the backside.

Restring the jute and add the wooden key. Tie a bow if desired.

Or, leave it the way it was originally.

Take the 3 rose buds and glue them to the center of the corrugated cardboard.

This better shows the wooden key hanging from the jute.

Before writing the scripture on the index cards, first practice on a separate piece of paper. When you like how it looks, replicate it onto the index cards. If you don't have a pink marker, use classic black.

Tuck the cards into the pocket you created.

This is another example of how to write the scripture. For more script options, google it.

Happy Valentine's Day!
